Yesterday we finally made it to the organic food market in the Sisli district of Istanbul. We had talked about it for months, and I don’t know what took us so long! If you live in Istanbul – please don’t wait so long to go as we did! You can find directions to the market here. It’s on every Saturday afternoon!
We found some … umm, ‘interesting looking’ berries (aka the funkiest berries I’ve see so far!) which were explained to us as ‘mountain strawberries’. They are delicious raw, but since we got a huge container full, I decided to improvise some for a nice autumn waffle breakfast.
Gluten free waffles a la Turkish mountain berry
The waffle dough has berries in it, but we also ate it with a berry compote on top. So delicious! I mis-calculated a bit on the amount of dough needed and made a bit too much! These were so delicious, we couldn’t just leave them for tomorrow! They all ended up in our stomachs and that’s why we are now about to take a Sunday nap… 🙂
– 1/2 cup rice flour
– 2 Tbsp honey
– 1 egg
– 3 Tbsp homemade almond butter (or from the jar)
– about 3/4 cup of milk
– 1/2 Tsp baking powder
– 1/2 washed and cup up berries
Mix all ingredients together until the berries are a bit mushed. I started with mixing flour and baking powder, then adding the almond butter until I have a nice paste. Simply put into the waffle iron and bake.
– 1/2 cup of washed and halfed berries
– 1/4 cup of water
– 1 Tbsp honey
Put all ingredients in a little pan and boil/cook until the water has evaporated and it’s gluey.
Serve on the waffle while warm, add a sprinkle of honey and some chocolate if you like! I sat my chocolate robot on top of the waffle, he’s made of milk chocolate and cinnamon.
